Eye tests

An eye test is more important than you think. An annual eye exam is not just about getting glasses, but is an important health check for your eyes. Our Optometrists will check not just your vision but the general health and well being of your eyes.

Regardless of physical condition or age, it is essential to have at least an annual eye exam to help catch any eye problems before it progresses. This gives you the best chance to correct or prevent the condition from worsening.

What to expect from an Eye Test

Visual Acuity

This is a test to measure the sharpness of your vision.

Colour Blindness

A screening test to check your colour vision.

Cover Test

This is the simplest and easiest way to test if your eyes work well together.

Ocular Motility

This test determines how well your eyes can follow a moving object as well as fixate on different targets. Issues with eye movement can cause eye strain and lead to difficulties in reading.

Glaucoma

Most glaucoma tests involve testing the pressure in your eye.

Slit Lamp Exam

This is a specific test our Optometrists use to examine the structure of your eye under high magnification. This helps detect a wide range of eye conditions and diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, corneal ulcers and diabetic retinopathy.

Digital Retinal Photography

A Digital Retinal Scan provides a 30° to 45° photograph of your retina, optic nerve and blood vessels. This attention to detail is important, as some eye conditions and other medical issues can be detected by comparing small changes over time.

Visual Fields

A visual field test is an eye examination that can detect dysfunction in central and peripheral vision which may be caused by various medical conditions such as glaucoma, stroke, pituitary disease, brain tumours or other neurological deficits

Our Comprehensive Eye Test in Sydney Will Protect Your Vision and Your Health

Vision is a precious gift, and your eyes are one of your most valuable assets. Hence the importance of eye health and having a regular, comprehensive eye test in Sydney with a reputable professional. Your eye exam is essential to maintain eye condition and avoid any preventable eye conditions or diseases.

The Importance of Regular Eye tests

The benefits of an eye test as part of responsible eye care include:

  • Maintaining healthy vision: Regular screening and eye examinations allow us to measure and monitor your eye health and track and attend to any vision loss over time.

  • Correcting vision anomalies: Certain eye conditions can be alleviated or minimised through proper eye exercises, possible lifestyle changes, and, if necessary, corrective glasses or contact lenses.

  • Diagnosing and treating emerging eye conditions: Your eye exam can preserve your eye health and protect your vision by accurately diagnosing conditions or eye diseases early.

  • Identifying other unrelated severe health conditions: Most people are unaware that overall health and eye care and optometry are closely linked. However, eye examinations can indicate other health conditions. For example, retinal blood vessel health mirrors general circulation reflecting high blood pressure or diabetes, while corneal rings suggest high cholesterol. In addition, tissue inflammation and other indicators help detect certain cancers, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease, and several other potentially life-threatening concerns.

  • Managing the impact of overall health concerns: Chronic diseases such as diabetes require particularly responsible eye care, including regular dilation tests to check for diabetic retinopathy. As a person with diabetes, neglecting your eye health could result in vision loss or blindness.

  • Helping your child learn: While you may assume young eyes are trouble-free, ensuring eye care for your kids is vital. Statistics suggest that much of their learning is reliant on good vision. So should they be struggling with their eyesight, perhaps without their or your knowledge, it could mean the difference between failure and a world of frustration.

As a general rule, we recommend an annual eye examination. However, speak to your optometrist to confirm how often to get an eye exam based on your needs. Your age and overall health will also dictate frequency; less often in your 20s and 30s but more frequently after 40. However, childhood vision checks should be regular and routine.

In addition, should you currently have serious vision difficulties or defects, have eye disease in the family or already wear corrective lenses, you’ll require diligent vision testing.

What Sets Core Optique Apart Regarding Eye Care in Sydney

Our thorough approach to visual wellness means you’ll enjoy several advantages when booking your consultation with us, including:

  • A comprehensive, 45-minute eye examination test: Many Australians may not know the difference between a vision screening and eye examinations. The screening takes around 20-minutes and only tests how well you can see. In contrast, eye examinations provide a complete 45-minute vision and eye health check. Although screening is appropriate for transport NSW eye tests, it is inadequate for your annual eye test and examination.

  • Tailored eye care: Our technicians are highly trained and experienced across various ocular conditions and have access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology, aligning with industry best practice, advanced thought leadership, and cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment. No one size fits all; in fact, no one eye is exactly like another, not even your left and your right, meaning your assessment, lenses, and other remedies will be bespoke.

  • Care and consideration: Our team is warm, friendly, and dedicated to making your visit pleasant and stress-free. Our eye care optometrist conducts your examination gently and unhurriedly, conveying results clearly and compassionately.

  • Orthokeratology: Should you be diagnosed with myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia, where the shape of your eyeball has changed, you might need strong lenses to correct your vision or even surgery. Good news: we now have an innovative solution. Through orthokeratology, you’ll wear specially designed ortho-k lenses while you sleep. These breathable lenses gently reshape your eyeball overnight, providing spectacle and lens-free corrected vision during the day.

  • A wide range of premium frames: Our exciting range of local and global brands suit every style, face shape, and lifestyle. Please browse our range online or pop into one of our stores to see what’s available. Our brands include Tom Ford, Mykita, Ahlem, Modo, Linda Farrow, Super Retro Future, David Beckham, Yves Saint Laurent, VX, LeSpecs, Nike, Longchamp, and many more. • Help with frame styling: Frames are a long-term commitment and costly, and you’ll need to choose wisely. So we know the importance of finding the right frames, and at the same time, how selecting from a wide variety of sizes, styles, shapes, and colours can be bewildering. Our frame stylist helps take the pain out of your decision, ensuring you’re delighted with your choice. We’re also excited to introduce our virtual try-on service, where we match-make you with your perfect pair from wherever you are, using digital technology. Email us a recent selfie, and we’ll do the rest. Trust us to find frames in style to suit your face, lifestyle, and individuality.

What to Expect from Us Regarding Your Optical Exam

On arrival, your optometrist will ask several questions to understand and record your background to ensure we’re aware of existing problems, allergies or health concerns. Your examination will take 45-minutes including various types of equipment and the following eight tests:

  1. Visual acuity: This test assesses the clarity and ‘sharpness’ of your vision. In other words, how easily each eye can read and correctly identify letters on a chart from six metres (20 feet) away. This distance is where the term ’20-20 vision’ comes from, and you may recognise the familiar chart containing random letters in rows of increasingly diminishing size.

  2. Colour blindness: As the name suggests, this test will evaluate whether or not you’re colour blind, in other words, whether the colours you see are the same as those seen by others. Typically colour blindness affects 8 percent of males and 0.4 percent of females in our population, interfering with mainly green and red colour differentiation.

  3. Cover test: This assessment efficiently reveals to what extent your eyes work in unison. Misalignment could suggest strabismus (cross-eyes).

  4. Ocular motility: Here, we test how well your eyes track a moving object, our finger or pen, for example, and how efficiently they focus on a particular point. Difficulties in this task could suggest you’re vulnerable to eye strain and fatigue.

  5. Glaucoma: This involves blasting a tiny puff of air onto your eye (non-contact tonometry) to measure eye pressure. Early diagnosis of this unpleasant eye disease is crucial as the condition is painful and can result in eye loss.

  6. Slit-lamp examination: This test allows your optometrist to examine your eye structures under magnification. This close-up stage is where your professional will be able to identify not only several eye conditions such as corneal ulcers, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and cataracts but also perhaps spot any unrelated systemic health concerns.

  7. Digital retinal scan: This is a scan or photograph of your retina. By keeping image records of your retina, your optometrist will be able to detect any changes over time and take preventative or remedial action.

  8. Visual fields: This examination can reveal problems in your central and peripheral vision, possibly caused by pituitary disease, glaucoma, or neurological concerns such as brain tumours.

There’s no need to be nervous; none of these tests will cause any discomfort or pain. Once you receive your diagnosis, you can set about selecting your new frames should you require corrective lenses. Your optometrist will advise you about when to expect your glasses or contact lenses.
