Hyperopia

(Long sightedness)

Hyperopia (long sightedness) is the opposite of myopia, another common vision condition where objects appear clear in the distance, however blurry close up. The level of your long sightedness can influence your ability to focus. If you experience eye strain, aching in or around the eyes, tired eyes, headaches or squinting while reading or watching television, you should book an appointment with our optometrists to prevent the condition from worsening.

Myopia

(Short sightedness)

Myopia (short sightedness), is a common vision condition where objects appear clear close up, however blurry in the distance. A condition that tends to run in families, short sightedness may develop gradually or rapidly, often during childhood or adolescence. If you are short sighted, you may have difficulty seeing while driving, and therefore is important to book an appointment with one of our optometrists immediately.

Presbyopia

(Age-related long sightedness)

A common part of aging, presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus. Usually occurring in your early 40’s, presbyopia can gradually or rapidly worsen over time. You can correct the condition with glasses or contact lenses. If you are over 40, an annual eye exam is recommended.

Dry Eyes

When your tears are unable to provide adequate lubrication, your eyes become dry. Dry eyes can also occur if you produce poor quality tears. Symptoms include but not limited to, stinging or burning, sensitivity to slight, eye redness, watery eyes, tired eyes and difficulty wearing contacts. Dry eyes can be easily treated and is recommended to book an eye health exam.

Pterygia

(Surfers Eye)

Pterygia commonly forms from being in bright sunlight for long periods of time, especially when you are near or on water, as the water reflects the sun’s harmful UV rays. Pterygia, or otherwise known as surfer’s eye, is an elevated, pink, triangular shaped bump on the cornea of the eye. EYE FLOATERS

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration affects the macular region of the eye. It is the leading cause of severe vision impairments within Australian for people over 40 years of age. The symptoms of age-related macular degeneration is a gradual decline in the ability to see objects clearly, distorted vision, the dulling of colours, distorted vision, empty or dark spaces that block your central field of vision and/or hallucinations. Cataracts

Cataracts are another leading cause of vision impairment within Australians. Cataracts are not only an elderly condition; they can occur in young eyes as well. Cataracts is the clouding of the lens in the eye which over time leads to a decrease in vision. Cataracts can be detected with a general eye health exam.

Astigmatism

(Irregular shaped eye)

Astigmatism is a common condition occurring in both myopia or hyperopia patients, where the shape of a person’s cornea appears irregular. Astigmatism is not an eye disease or health issue, it simply a condition that can create distorted vision, inability to focus on light, blurred vision and/or irritation.  

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in your eye. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over the age of 60. It can occur at any age but is more common in older adults. Many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The effect is so gradual that you may not notice a change in vision until the condition is at an advanced stage.

Sunburn

Your eyes are extremely sensitive to the sun’s UV rays and can easily burn. Sunburned eyes may feel painful or gritty. Protecting your eyes from UV rays are the only preventative measure. Too much sun exposure to the eyes increases your risk of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration and even eyelid cancer. Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis or ‘pink eye’, is a common condition where the white part of the eye turns a pink. This is due to the eyes clear outer layer and the eyelid becoming inflamed.
