Orthokeratology (ortho-k)

Wouldn’t it be great if you could correct your eyesight and reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses, without having to undergo eye surgery? Now you can!

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is the fitting of specially designed gas permeable contact lenses that you wear overnight. While you are asleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of your eye (cornea) so you can see clearly the following day after you remove the lenses when you wake up. Ortho-k lenses are prescribed for two purposes: To correct refractive errors (primarily nearsightedness, but also astigmatism and hyperopia). In some cases, ortho-k also is used to correct presbyopia. To slow the progression of childhood myopia.

Are there age restrictions with Ortho-K?

The answer is no. Orthokeratology treatments are successful on both children as young as 9 and adults of all ages. Ortho-K is a perfect treatment for children and teens who are active in sports, swimming or outdoor activities.

Can anyone wear Ortho-K?

Not all cases are successful candidates. However, Othokeratology has been around for a long time, starting in the 1940’s. Several advances in technology and manufacturing has made it possible to treat a wide range of vision problems. To find out if you are a successful candidate, book a consultation with one of our highly trained optometrists.

I suffer from Astigmatism, am I a candidate for Ortho-K?

In short, yes. Orthokeratology can correct mild to moderate levels of Astigmatism. Our optometrists will be able to assess whether your individual case is able to be corrected during your consultation appointment.

How long does it take to start working?

Most patients will see a rapid improvement within the first 48-72 hours of treatment. For higher prescriptions it may take slightly longer, you will achieve optimum results within 10-14 days.

Ortho-K only works for as long as you continue treatment. You are able to stop at any time. It can take around 72 hours for your vision to return to its original state after discontinued use.

To maximise your vision, it is recommend to wear your lenses every night. For people with mild to moderate prescriptions, some will find they can get up to two days of corrected vision.
